The scary, strange, and sad case of Jaycee Dugard has been splashed all over the media in the past week.  Dugard was kidnapped in 1991 and held captive by a couple for 18 years, even bearing two children by accused kidnapper Phillip Garrido.  Though this case is bizarre and rare, there have been other weird tales of kidnappings, some that have never been solved.  Here are five of the strangest.

1.  "The Girl in the Box"

Colleen Stan

Sadly, Jaycee Dugard is not the first young person to be kidnapped and held captive over a period of years.  In 1977, Colleen Stan was 20 years old when she was kidnapped by Cameron Hooker and his wife Janice.  Stan was held captive as Cameron's sexual slave for 7 years, tortured through electrocution and whippings.  During a 3-year stretch, she was kept in a box underneath the couple's bed and only allowed to exit the structure for an hour a day.  She was also forced to sign a "slave contract" and was told an organization called "The Company" would murder her family if she did not comply with Hooker's demands.  Strangely, Carol and Cameron Hooker visited Carol's family during her days in captivity, but she did not try to escape.  Eventually, Janice, who had been abused by her husband Cameron for years, facilitated Colleen Stan's release and took her story to the police.  Cameron Hooker was sentenced to over 100 years in jail, and his wife was immune from prosecution.  Today, Colleen Stan is an author.

2. Angela Hammond

Angela Hammond

In 1991, 20-year-old Angela Hammon was abducted during a phone call to her fiance, Rob Shafer.  From a pay phone in a darkened parking lot, Angela described a man in a green pickup truck who was acting somewhat suspicious.  During the call, Rob heard a scream and the phone dropping, and he raced to the area.  He chased the truck (with Angela screaming his name) until his transmission failed.  The pickup sped out of site, and the Angela Hammon has not been seen since.

3.  The Victims of John T. Jamelske

John T. Jamelske

A Syracuse millionaire kidnapped teenage girls and women and housed them in a homemade concrete dungeon located under his house.  A hoarder and junk collector, Jamelske raped and videotaped the young women after sessions of Bible study.  After his capture, he stated that all of the women loved staying in the dungeon and that he helped them defeat drugs.

4.  Tami Lynn Leppert

Tami Lynn Leppert

A beauty queen and actress, Tami Lynn was last seen in 1983 after an argument in a car with a male friend; she was let out barefoot by the historic Glass Bank in Cocoa Beach and disappeared.  Over the last year of her life, she was increasingly paranoid, convinced someone was trying to murder her.  There has been speculation that she was a victim of serial killer Christopher Wilder, but this has never been confirmed.  Her family is still searching for her.

5.  Sherrill Levitt, Suzanne Streeter, Stacy McCall

Sherrill Levitt Suzanne Streeter Stacy McCall

These three women disappeared from Levitt's home, leaving behind purses, medication, cigarettes, and the family's dog.  Sherrill, a salon owner, was the mother of Suzanne Streeter, who returned home from a graduation party the night before the disappearance with her friend, Stacy McCall.  Sherrill was last heard from at 11:15 p.m. on a telephone call to a friend.  Friends of Suzanne and Stacy found the house open the next day, a light bulb broken on the front porch.  Although there had been numerous potential sightings of the women in a van, the three haven't been found, and there are no viable suspects to date.
