Buzzfeed [NSFW] calls Chatroulette "the go to site if you want to chat with the most socially depraved people you will ever interact with." So just what is this latest Internet craze?
Like Skype, Chatroulette is a place where you can video chat with people all over the world. Unlike Skype, you are not chatting with family and friends, you are chatting with strangers... only strangers. Visit the site, press Play, and you are thrown onto the "roulette" of chatters, where you can connect and disconnect an unlimited number of times, meeting hundreds of strangers from a nice college boy to a depraved pedophile... and every weirdo in between.
On my visit, I saw only one female who was draped over a male (no shots of their faces) and playing loud, thumping music. The message I got was, "Want a virtual threeway?" (Um, no thanks.) The rest of the chatters with whom I connected were universally male; most were (if I had to estimate) between the ages of 20 - 45. And most were definitely not interested in seeing my cat.
With one exception, who was a dog.

Chatroulette could be a fun diversion for adults, but for kids, it's a huge no-no. Though the site states that it's for people over 16 and no pornography or nudity is allowed, there is no real way to police that (and no registration process). And scarily, MomLogic found one 17-year-old girl who found her boyfriend on Chatroulette... did we mention he is 35?
So, remember parents, make sure your children aren't jumping on Chatroulette, and talk to them about the dangers of interacting with strangers online, no matter how nice they seem ("I like the same band as you" is the new "Want some candy?"). And most of all, think: does your child really need a Web cam? I mean, really?
