It was tragic enough that thousands of Haitian children were orphaned during the devastating Haiti earthquake.  But now, predators are taking the children from the streets with offers of food.  Where are these children going?

The quake that has killed 150,000 people has left thousands of children orphaned, and vulnerable to being preyed upon by child traffickers and Haiti's shameful tradition of keeping child slaves known as restaveks. "I really fear," says Pean, "that most of the kids you see being picked up on the streets in Haiti right now are going to become restaveks or victims of sexual trafficking."

It is such a sad situation for the children of Haiti right now. What many people do not realize is that the children of Haiti have been victims of human trafficking long before the earthquake came. This is not new to the people of Haiti, though it may be more prevalent now that so many more children are without parents. I went to the Dominican Republic for a study abroad trip (we studied sustainable tourism including human traffic as a result of tourism) and Haitian children were everywhere as servants and slaves of all types. I've said this a million times, and I will continue to say it, my hope is that this unthinkable tragedy will open the worlds eyes to the needs of Haiti, and that Haiti will finally be given the support and attention it needs.
