In today's video, we talk about boys and whether or not they get a bad rap. But what if you could choose the sex of your baby? Well, if you have $18,000, and you visit The Fertility Institutes, you can decide not to have an icky boy... or a yucky girl, whatever you like.
Not enough choices? Well, how about being able to choose hair, eye, and complexion color? That's on the horizon too! Excuse us while we shudder.
Sure, these "selections" might seem harmless, but how far is too far? Should we be able to choose height and weight? What about intelligence, size of facial features, or athletic prowess? And should we be able to wean out personality traits, homosexuality, or race? Talk about playing Dr. Frankenstein (or possibly Sir Francis Galton)! Won't creating perfect "designer" babies just leave us all one big homogenous soup?
It's great that science has progressed so far as to let us test genetically for such things as cancer tendencies, but the picking and choosing of genders and hair colors smacks of science gone creepy. Should prospective parents look at children as another accessory, one that they can customize like their cars? What does that say about the future of parenthood? And what message does that send kids of today? Your thoughts?
