If you've purchased OTC containing pseudoephedrine in the last few years, you've probably had to fork over your ID and sign a release.  That's because the government is on a crusade to rid the country of methamphetamine (synthesized with the decongestant ingredient), which has devastated rural America.  You're used to seeing the usual images of a methamphetamine user: she's poor, lives in the country, and her looks have been ravaged due to her drug use.  But another, not less disturbing image is slowly taking over.  These new users are called meth moms, and they're abusing the powerful stimulant in order to "do it all."  But at what cost?

What are the benefits of meth use to these mothers?  It's cheap, it's accessible, and it gives busy and tired mamas a big boost of energy.  But it also causes symptoms like delusions, hallucinations, and violence.  It's highly addictive and illegal, with penalities including long jail sentences. Worst of all, mothers with a meth addiction often lose their children to the state. 

So, how many mothers are using this dangerous pick me up?  No one knows for sure, but one report says perhaps thousands... and growing.  One mom's story is all too familiar:

I set out to be the perfect mom. I used hand sanitizer before I touched her, and boiled her bottles. But Cameren was waking up every two hours and I was worn out. I knew just what would perk me up — and I started feeling that familiar urge.

I felt guilty when I started smoking meth again, but I also told myself it was helping me be a better mom. A few puffs gave me the energy to clean the apartment, do Cameren's laundry, run some errands, and still be wide awake whenever she cried.

This mother eventually was jailed and lost custody of her child due to her addiction but was able to get clean and regain custody.  Many mothers, however, are not so lucky.
