Schools can be germ factories, and no illness has been in the news more than our old friend the swine flu.  Yes, it has not disappeared, and in fact, there have been a resurgence of H1N1 cases this summer.  So, are you afraid that this somewhat virulent flu will strike your home once your child goes back to school?  But things aren't as bad as they seemed just last year:

There are two main changes in the recommendations for the upcoming school year. The first involves the length of time children must stay home after they develop flu like symptoms... typically the H1N1 flu lasts 2 - 4 days, and that staying home until a child is fever-free (without the use of fever reducers) for 24 hours is sufficient...[and] In the fall, the goal is to keep schools open...

Check out MomLogic for tips on how to keep your child sickness-free this school year.

My family and I were in the process of moving to Mexico from Wisconsin when the Swine Flu first broke. Our families were near hysterical that we were on our way to the Swine Flu epicenter. I understand. But we have good immune systems. Go vitamins! It’s just always a battle. I’m always like: “Don’t touch your face. What did I just say? STOP. God, stop touching your…! Geez, do you WANT to get sick?” Both our toddlers have bleach white curly hair and the locals ask us all the time if the girls’ hair is real. Then they touch it! This grosses me out. It’s like when my girls were babies and their little hands were all tightly fisted full of drool and people would come up and actually stick their dirty “other people fingers” into my baby’s wet, drooly fists. It’s not like I could ask them to squirt some Purell onto their - God knows where they’ve been - hands. It was always a quick grab and then gone. We’ve even had some local moms bring their kids over to touch their hair. So I don’t think this is going to stop anytime soon and wondering if there’s a way to apply Purell to their hair after it’s been felt-up. If we get sick it will most likely be from hand-to-head-to-eye contact. www.buenobaby.com

My daughter just started public school. My mother called me the other day to tell me the private school across the street had a major outbreak of Swine Flu as has LSU about 45 minutes away from where I live. I am a bit nervous because I have an immune dificiency but what can I do? I wash my hands and try to teach my daughter the same. Right now due to some health issues I am home bound so I am not around people all day long but my daughter is and she can bring it into the home. I just need to be careful, keep a close eye out for the signs and make sure we wash hands. Also, I need to get some masks in this house just in case. It is a good thing to have on hand.
