Nicole Passonno Stott is set to become the sixth woman to spend time on the International Space Station.  She blasts off Monday to start a four-month stay.  And because she's a woman and a mom, she spends a lot of time fielding inquiries about her family who will be left behind.

Why? She's a mom, not a dad. And despite continuing shifts in women's roles, it's apparently still more compelling when a mother leaves a child.

Not only do women in science and engineering fields face questions about their home life, they often leave their jobs due to bad work environments and undue pressure:

The female drop-out rate is massive: 52 per cent of highly qualified women working for science, engineering and technology companies voluntarily leave their jobs, driven out by hostile work environments and extreme job pressures.

Are you a woman in a science, engineering, or math field?  Do you find it difficult to be female in the workplace?  And what do you think of Stott's achievements?
