I think the vast majority of posts online are mean because people, in general, are actually mean-spirited and self-centered. They cannot, or would not, be mean to other people face-to-face, but behind the anonymity of an on-line post, their true nature can be expressed without consequences. Just one mean-spirited a$$hole's opinion.... Mandy

I don't know if I agree that those people are generally mean-spirited and self-centered, but I do think they're often angry, insecure, and avoidant of real or productive confrontation with the goal of working out a problem. It's so much safer and easier to lash out at people in the blogosphere, operating from behind the protection of a screen name and without having to deal with anyone's real-time reaction. They get to discharge their dissatisfaction with life in general through snarky or downright mean remarks without having to face real-life consequences of that kind of behavior...except that the rest of us are left thinking "wow, SHE'S kind of a psycho!"
