I'm just going to come right out and say it -- I'm not a football fan. I can watch it and mostly know what's going on, but I definitely do not have a favorite team, nor do I know any players other than maybe Tony Romo. However, I can enjoy watching the sport if I am with a group of people that get really into it, which generally happens around the Super Bowl. I'm not into loud, overcrowded bars stuffed with drunk fans, so I much prefer to watch the game from the comfort of my own home or the home of a friend. Because there are a zillion football fans out there that probably will host their own Super Bowl party, so came the inspiration for this post. I've recruited the help of super fabulous event guru Tamsin Londsdale, creator of the exclusive London-LA-NYC dining club, The Supper Club. She plans tons of events per month at the most exclusive venues and knows everything anyone would need to know to plan a rad party. So, thank you to Tamsin for sharing her insights. Below, Tamsin Lonsdale's top tips for Super Bowl entertaining.
Tamsin Says: I am a Brit so the Super Bowl is a relatively new thing for me. Nonetheless, here are my top tips for entertaining a Super Bowl party, from what I have learned in the last three years of living in the states running The Supper Club.
Venue
Impress friends by finding a sick place to host the event. A killer screening room would be my ideal choice. If you are on a budget, try renting a screen and watching the game on your roof.
If you have space, it’s a good idea to spread the event out into two rooms, one for socializing and one for watching the game, for those die hard fans that are glued to the tube and don’t want to be distracted by party chatter.
If you are entertaining at home, make sure your place is clean and tidy, and that it smells good – light some candles and bake some cookies! In terms of seating, make as many seating options available as possible. Reposition the couches in your house or apt in order to make everyone feel like they have a place to sit and get comfy. Throw a few pillows on the ground to make some more seats if your space is limited. If you're back East, put out some blankets so everyone can get cozy! There's nothing worse than being in someone else's home and feeling like you can't truly relax.
Take Sides
If you are impartial to the team’s playing, do your homework and figure out which team is worth rooting for and get excited about it.
Attire
No party is complete without a dress code! You can either say wear your favorite jersey, or cheerleaders & jocks, get into it and get dressed up to really get in the mood.
Surprise your guests
Create your own 1/2 time show, hire in entertainment to bring the party to life.
Catering
If you are feeling lazy and have the budget, hire your favorite caterer to take care of the food for the night. Or, get creative in the kitchen. No Super Bowl party would be the same without burgers, dips, chili, and wings, so why not try taking it up a notch, and turning these Super Bowl staples into a gourmet affair? Use spices and herbs and fresh ingredients. Here’s what I plan to serve up this year:
