Different, Fun Things to Do This Summer

FB Share

The kids are out of school, and you're out of ideas.  Summer's coming, and that means you've got to come up with activities to keep your children busy.  Here are some tips from Momversation (and don't forget to watch tomorrow's video: free-range kids vs. summer camp kids).

Outdoor concerts:  Introduce your children to a wide range of music by taking them to an outdoor concert, like at the Hollywood Bowl or to see the Boston Pops.  It's double the fun if you pack a picnic.  Google "outdoor concert" for info.

Create a nature scrapbook:  Collect flowers, non-toxic plants, and other natural keepsakes from your area, as well as pictures of sunsets, water elements, and animals.  Makes notes on where and when you found them and what their characteristics are.

Teach your children to make summer-friendly food:  Make homemade sorbet and ice cream using ingredients from your local farmers' market (fresher and cheaper, too!).  Creating one-of-a-kind salads and sandwiches are also an enjoyable, creative way to expell some listless-kid energy.

Volunteer work:  Is your child old enough to volunteer?  Then, make this the summer to give back.  Gear your volunteering to something your child is truly interested in.  If your child loves plays, give back to your local community theater.  The outdoors?  Pick up litter in the park.  You don't even have to join an organized group to make a difference!

Encourage your child to take up a new skill:  Is there something your child has been bugging you to do?  Now's the time!  Or maybe your child is bored and needs some suggestions.  Whether it's learning an instrument, a taking up a new sport, or writing a story, the three months of summer is a great time for your child to start on his or her new craze.

There's a ton of activities to do during the summer months.  Make sure to take advantage of the warm weather by hiking, biking, swimming, and playing outdoor games.  And make sure to take advantage of the extra time by reading, painting, crafting, and visiting museums.  What are your suggestions for summer fun?

These are some really great ideas. I think the idea of getting your child to learn a new skill is invaluable. Especially if you are parenting a defiant child. Getting them involved in multiple activities can keep them busy and focused.

Every year, my boys and I set goals. They work on them (used to be that they needed tons of help), and at the end of the summer, we have a celebration for all of us that completed our goals. As a result, they know how to clean better, cook, bake and have read many of the classics.

It is something that my mother did with me when I was a kid, and it was really instrumental in preparing me to be a better mother and wife, not to mention helping me learn to set and achieve goals. She actually wrote a book about it as well as a lot of the other fun things that she and my dad did to keep 11 children happy and productive. It is called, "So, What can Kids do in the Summertime?".

I know that this sounds like a plug, and I guess it king of is, but mostly I just think that my mom had heaps of great ideas that would be helpful for most any family.

I'm a mom who works outside of the home that loves coming up with creative things to do with my boys during the summer. Several years ago I took a week off from work and created my own summer camp and call it Mommy Day Camp. I planned a special activity each day like a scavenger hunt or a triathlon with a twist. The boys had so much fun and have requested "Mommy Day Camp" ever since that first summer...even my 14 year old!

I've complied my favorite 20 activites in a ebook titled "Mommy Day Camp." If you are interested, please visit my website http://www.mommydaycamp.com.

Enjoy!
