5 Ways to "Trick" Your Kids Into Eating Healthfully
This article isn't about sneaking spinach into meals. That is soooo 2007 Deceptively Delicious. No, this post is about serving the healthful foods that are so tasty your kids will forget they're eating "good" food. Here are the 5 yummiest, actually delicious, nutritious foods.
1. Yogurt Parfait

What Makes It Delicious?
Lowfat yogurt, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and a dollop of non-fat Cool Whip make this healthful food more like a treat.
What Makes It Nutritious?
Berries have anti-oxidants and phytoflavonoids, cutting the risk of heart disease and cancer. They are also packed with potassium and Vitamin C and have anti-inflammatory properties. As an added bonus, blueberries are also supposed to help stave off Alzheimer's. And yogurt is a good source of calcium and aids in digestion.
2. Dark Chocolate

It's chocolate. Duh. It might seem bitter to kids who are used to milk chocolate, so slowly up the cocoa content.

3. Spinach Salad with Walnuts

What Makes It Delicious?
I know, spinach. But if your kid will eat salad, they'll probably eat raw baby spinach; just don't mention the "S" word. Add walnuts, balsamic vinaigrette, and a little bacon (everything's better with bacon), and you might just have a spinach convert.
What Makes It Nutritious?
Walnuts pack a huge nutritional punch in a small package. They're high in anti-oxidants, fiber, B vitamins, and omega 3s. Spinach helps fight cancer and is loaded with Vitamin K, which help protect bones.
4. Watermelon

What Makes It Delicious?
Sweet, juicy, and refreshing. Aaaahhhh, the watermelon.
What Makes It Nutritious?
Watermelon contains lycopene, beta carotene, and Vitamin C, cancer and heart attack preventers. Its also a great way to get kids hydrated!
5. Vegetarian Chili

What Makes It Delicious?
It's hearty, warming, and can be topped with lots of fun ingredients, like low-fat cheese.
What Makes It Nutritious?
Canned tomatoes are a great source of lycopene, that cancer-fighting superpower. Beans are an amazing way to get soluble fiber (a colon cancer fighter), folate, potassium, and protein (just make sure to rinse canned beans to wash away the salty liquid). Throw in your child's favorite veggies, and you've got a meal that will please even a picky eater (we hope!).
