Dana, thank you so much for your hair care tips! I have super straight hair, but my husband comes from a family with unruly curls. And on the day my daughter was born, I turned to my sisters-in-law, and muttered, "If she has his hair, you're going to have to teach me how to style it for her." But now I know what to do.

just to balance all the folks arguing against "baggy clothes," can I say: tight-fitting clothes, especially paired with low-rider pants, can make young, slim women look like they have huge bulging hips and waist rolls! what's up with this flatters-nobody fashion? find stuff that fits *your shape* in a reasonable and flattering way, whether that means close-fitting or loose, rather than going with "current fashion" even if it makes you adjust yourself every two minutes and look uncomfortable and off-balance all the time. life is too short, especially if you have kids and other obligations keeping you running around -- comfortable doesn't have to mean slovenly, and fashionable doesn't have to mean can't bend!

So where is a good place to buy bras? (no NY or LA boutiques please) I live in New Orleans, and I'm a 34DD!!! HELP!

For me it's make-up that makes the difference. But I need that difference in 5 minutes or less because mornings are bananas.

1) Nars the Multiple in Orgasm: I use it as blush daily and in a pinch I use it on my eyelids and lips as well. It gives you a glow and a radiance that mimics sleep.

2) Dior Show: worlds. best. mascara.

3) Benefit Erase Paste: Does what it says. Erases dark circles and wears like a dream.

4) Benefit Brow Zings: A little attention to the brow makes the whole face look more polished.

5) Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer/ Clinique Moisture Balms: Wearable, easy to apply, finishes the look.

I this routine from the time I brought my daughter home from the hospital and it made all the difference in how I felt during the months of no sleep and baby weight crept in.

Oh my gosh, Dana. You made me pee a little with the Tawny Kitaen reference. And I could not agree more with Giyen's comment about NOT WEARING BAGGY CLOTHES. I cannot stress that point enough...it just makes us look worse! Now excuse me while I go buy some ankle boots, because apparently I can't live without them!!!

Oh Daphne! I've been picking through my closet for years; throwing this or that away, trying to figure out what's been bothering me about all the cheap shoes and random outfits- then BANG! European closet. It's what I've been trying to figure out for years and you have given me the term. I have seen the light! It's been so obvious! Garbage in-garbage out! What was I thinking?!?!?

My sister used to love a place called the $7 Store where every item was exactly $7. I used to make fun of her and say that if she had $1000, she'd buy a $1000 worth of $7 clothes- but in a way I've been doing the same thing! My closet has been bothering me because of all the crap I've settled for over the years. I don't like shopping and don't do it often enough to settle for things I kinda' like. This is like a revelation! My dad (God rest him), always said that I should never wear cheap clothes. He insisted I buy quality because of being built so big and solid. I guess when I started paying for my own clothes I sorta lost my way. He was so right! I'd rather have 5 items I love than 15 I sorta' like. It all makes sense now! Closet re-vamp this weekend! I did my daughter's last night because of the change in season, but I always disregard mine! Oh I am on it girls! Just to stay inspired, I'll be playing Vogue by Madonna on repeat. Great Episode!!!!!

P.S. Curly hair and ankle boots forever!

Dana. I might want to make out with you!!! My hair was stick straight from the time I was born, until I was 26 and preggo w/my daughter and it decided it was time to be curly! And OMG, what the heck? I had zero idea of what to do with it. I've mainly wore it up in a ponytail for the past three years. I cannot wait to go home and try this technique. What is that leave-in conditioner you are using?? Spill woman!

Great episode! I love me some medium- to high-waisted skinny jeans. Throw 'em on with a long top, and I feel like I look a LITTLE put-together.

For make-up, I use Bourjois Paris eyeshadows (I've worn the same brown one for years), and L'Oreal mascara. And I feel like blush is non-optional. Even more than concealer, I think blush makes me look rested.

This was a fun one. I love topics like this. I have to say my product(s) of choice are anything made by MAC cosmetics. lol Mainly I love my lipsticks and lipglosses. My lips tend to blend into my face so I have to toss a bit of color on them. As for my personal style? It tends to be whatever is clean at the time lol I like a lot of jeans and sweat pants. I know I know BORING!!! lol

With clothing in my closet that range from size 6 to 16 ... I've learned that baggy clothes make you look fatter. Try on your clothing before you purchase it. Seriously, listen to me. There are certain brands (you know who they are) that have "vanity sizing" which can oftentimes be deceiving! Don't succumb to the muffin top just because you want to fit in that size 6.

Don't buy cheap shampo. You are worth the good kind. I use Aveda all the way. The Brilliance line makes my Korean hair look, feel and smell yummy.

Branch out and wear color. I used to buy black all the time until I realized that I could go to a funeral every day of the month and not have an outfit repeat.

And I can't agree more, Daphne. An ill fitting bra looks terrible.

Mon, 2009-09-28 22:09

giyen i second that on shampoo.... i live for aveda hair products. good call.

I don't have what I really call a personal style, it's more like I buy the same kinds of clothes everywhere I go. I have a Gap vibe going on. Jeans, plain tees, fleece, flip flops, simple jewelry and very simple makeup. Most days I don't even wear makeup at all but when I do, Stila tinted moisturizer, Cover Girl concealer and Cover Girl clear mascara. Smith's Rosebud Salve on the lips. That's it. I'm boring. And any style I used to have took a nose dive when I had a baby. I just don't have the time anymore to shop or do myself up.

Mon, 2009-09-28 12:39

About 95% of the time I'm in one of two modes... work/church cloths, OR I'm frumpin' it up in my baggy sweats. There is very little in between. On those rare occasions that I go out (yes I wore my sweats to the grocery store today - Guilty as charged, I will attempt to look nice. However, most of my going out clothes are left overs from college, or they just don't fit well. I wear make up about a dozen times a year, and my hair is either up in a bun thing or down.

I love fashion and feel great when I put some effort into it, but I just don't seem to have the time, money or energy to make it a priority.

Mon, 2009-09-28 12:09

Dana, thanks for the step-by-step on your hair. I happen to have the same kind of hair (color and everything!) and while I love my curls when they behave, the constant battle wore me out. Last winter after spending forty-five minutes in the shower trying to work the dreadlocks out of my hair (dry, salty winter air - HELL on curls) I flipped out and cut it all off. I am still bracing myself for the growing-out stage, because my hair grows UP and I am not relishing looking like John Turturro for months on end.

Lou

Fun Topic!

Personally, I try very hard to fight the 'schlumpy mommmy/let herself go' thing. I am not very trendy, but I try to stay somewhat 'with it' and young-ish in my appearance. My job is casual, so nice jeans/a blouse or sweater/flats is my typical work day wear. On my days off and weekends, I will admit to running errands in yoga pants but I leave the worn out ones for home/gym and will put on a nice sweater hoodie or zip up. I try not to leave the house w/o makeup (the new mineral makeup helps that - it goes on so fast) and if I don't wash and style my hair, it goes back in a ponytail. Badly chipped nail polish, baggy sweats and mom jeans are big no-nos for me. I am also slightly plus sized, so I try to be body aware and pick boot cut pants/jeans, darker washes, flowing tops, tailored jackets, etc.

dana- i'm with ya on the hair, especially since i just cut all mine off on friday...

here's a link to that post including pics of inches of hair on the floor... http://www.mybottlesup.com/operation-liberation

fave product my mah new do is bedhead's manipulator. it's in a blue jar, ewy gooey junk, but basically serves the purpose of holding your curl, your dreads, your mohawk, whatever style you have in place WITHOUT making your hair feel crusty or crunchy. love love LOVE that.

i don't go anywhere without a scarf. i have eleventy scarfs and they are all fantastic. i wear them with everything and anywhere, regardless of the season.

and yes, i was wearing them before they became the trend. that's right bitches.

What a cool subject. You ladies are all such lovely unique individuals and you carry that so well to your personal style it was fun hearing about it.
For myself with two younglings I keep it fairly simple.
I’m lucky I have decent hair so I just keep a good cut, then wash and go. Keeping brows groomed does wonders for the face too.
My makeup is basic spot conceal, powder, mascara, lipbalm or gloss. One product plug I will give is ‘Smashbox photo op’ under eye brightener (instead of concealer). It is awesome! Around $20 a tiny tub but it goes a LONG way.
For clothes I am a second hand junky. Every couple months I will go and forage for a couple new items just to keep my closet interesting. I also try not to horde clothes anymore and try to purge at least as many pieces as I’m bringing in.
Daphne is so right. Keeping a smaller closer with stock of essential great solid colour basics plus good undergarments and good shoes is the way to go. It also makes picking your outfit so much smoother than trying to sort through a world of clothes.
Being pregnant really taught me how little clothing you ACTUALLY need. I absolutely hated the idea of spending stupid amounts of money on maternity clothes for the five to six months I had the belly. So I seriously thought about it and I realized I only needed certain essentials. I spent my big belly stages rotating about 10-15 essential pieces and it has since changed my thinking on the amount of clothes I cling to.
Other than that I love to jazz things up with accessories. I have 20 plus necklaces, a few fun pairs of shoes (outside my nice basic ones) and 20 or so purses/bags. Oh and on the subject of bags I am not a fan of most ‘diaper bags’. I just use one of my nice larger shoulder bags when kids are in tow.

I'm a little confused about the Dana hair technique. So, you put conditioner in your hair and you don't rinse it out? Or is that some kind of a hair product that you use before finger curling?

Mon, 2009-09-28 08:52

The Redken Smooth Down Butter Treat that she used is technically a rinse out conditioner, but clearly it works for her to leave it in. I think a lot of us use products in creative ways. For me, my husband's after shave lotion from Kiehls works great as a daily moisturizer for me.

Mon, 2009-09-28 13:34

Confession: I rewound the vid three times to see Daphne's baby snuggle into her neck when she tickled his back fat.

**melting, melting**

first of all, i think we should all have Tawny Kitaen moments with our hair!

my signature thing when i am going out is wearing a pendant necklace. I got a pendant on a perfect-length chain many years ago from a friend, and my sweetie gets me new pendents for my birthday or christmas nearly every year, so I now have 6 or 7 to choose from. She's always on the look out for new shapes and colors to add to my collection.

This episode has been so enlightening. I love getting style tips from other moms, because we are all so beautiful in our personal ways.

Dana--OMG! I am sitting here in my pajamas and can't wait to go take a shower and try your hair tips. My hair is crazy curly and I struggle with it constantly. I want to grow it longer, but it gets to a point where it looks like Rosanne RoseannaDana and I cave. It never occured to me to finger curl it and let it air dry.

I'll let you guys know how it goes.
