Neither Janice nor I are huge consumers of celebrity mags, but we'll both admit to flipping through a few magazines in the grocery line. And yeah, I think the baby pictures are more likely to catch our attention than another photo of Brittany without any makeup or some cellulite on a photoshopped image of miss-hot-star-of-the-day. I think part of it is simple. Kids are cute. Photos of especially adorable kids are especially cute. Another reason I may skim through an article about Angelina's kids is that it's nice to be reminded that these superstars are people just like everyone else and seeing them parent brings them down to earth. I agree with Heather that it's rather similar to reading a blog... and actually I think it's kinda like people wanting to see pictures of Leeta and Chuck... (although my main reason for looking at Heather's photos is to be wowed by her great photography and laugh at the humor... like the Nov 19th photo of a preganacy test stick on Chuck's nose.) I do feel badly that the little tykes are swarmed by cameras, but at the same time, there's a lot of kids that have it rougher than that. All careers and lifestyles have pros and cons. Celebrity = tons of money + paparazzi Also I believe an actor or singer can be a huge success without he/she or the family being the main topic of every weekly gossip magazine. Lots of stars stay out of the gossip headlines... look at Shania Twain, Robert Deniro and tons of others. (I'm not enough of a celebrity guru to name many names, but you know what I'm saying.) I think Tom Cruise has totally used Suri to win back the affection of fans who had started to realize what an idiot he actually is. The magazines are fueling his career and he knows it. There's a reason they are strutting their family stuff for non-stop photo ops. Susan

Hi all :) I've never posted here before but this is a topic that i have thought about alot myself so i just had to put in my two cents... I think we are so obsessed (read : I am so obsessed) because we are led by the media and all the spin doctors of these celebrities to believe that they are perfect. There is nothing that i do less perfectly in my life than be a mom. I am stuck between relishing it when they are looking shabby as moms and feeling sorry for them when they screw up on a world stage. Remember when Britney almost dropped her son (Jaiden?) in front of about fifty photographers? Yeah, okay knowing what we know now she was probably off her head at the time, but back then i cringed and felt sooooooo sorry for her and also for her baby! How many times have we all screwed up royally and there hasn't been anyone to see it (thank god!) ? I think we want to see them with spit-up on their designer clothes and dark rings under their eyes from sleepless nights because it makes them more human, and maybe us a little bit more celebrity by comparison...

I grapple with this and blogging. I just am not that interested in the celebrity thing and so I don't really write about it (may explain my hit numbers.. lol), and frankly it seems so ubiquitous on women's/mother's sites I feel that it's well covered and doesn't need me to weigh in on a regular basis. Having said that, I think it's a vicarious thing, and a little female competitiveness. These celebrities are "glamorous" and seem to have it all, so when they are revealed as normal and grappling with a kid who is throwing a tantrum, looking not so hot without their makeup, etc., that may make some feel a little better about their daily life.

People are obsessed with Suri Cruise specifically because they aren't sure if she is an alien baby brought down from planet Xenu to rid the earth of thetans or if she is the worlds cutest robot here to overtake the human race. Really. Shiloh Nouvel & Zahara Jolie Pitt are our only hope.

I really think some common sense needs to come into play here. I don’t care how famous of a star someone is, they need a private down time life, especially their children. As a mom I wouldn’t want to walk out of my front door and have to shield my child from a mob of photo hungry paparazzi. Why do we feel that just because someone is a “celebrity” they owe us every inch of their being? Now don’t get me wrong, if Christian Bale takes his shirt off in any movie and I’ll gladly watch. What he does in his real life is none of my business. http://marriedsingleparent.blogspot.com/
