Celebrity Adoptions

How do you feel about celebrities adopting children? Do they get preferential treatment in the adoption process? If so, is that OK? What about adopting children from other countries? Do you feel they're doing it for the publicity?

It would be laughable to think anyone would go to the extent of adopting and raising a child for the publicity alone. Are mothers still so discriminated against? The saddest outcome of celebrity adoptions are truly poor parents in Africa and elsewhere who have bought into the idea that celebrities are lining up to rescue their children. These vulnerable families are surrendering their children to child predators who, for a small fee, are happy to "adopt" them into the thriving child sex trade.
If this weren't the case, I'd expect more celebrities to adopt. Their actions are so powerful, and their voices so loud, that preferential treatment is the least of my worries.

I doubt it. Someone might start out with that intention, but at the end of the day, adoption is not something that could be done on a whim. There is SO much paperwork involved. And anyone going through an adoption has to submit to fingerprinting, have a social worker do a homestudy, gather practically every document they've ever been issued, and then file with the government. I can see where a celebrity status might bump someone ahead in the line, but they still have to go through the same hoops as the rest of us.
It may seem like adoption is a "trend", but if more and more people (celebrity or otherwise) are stepping up to deal with the orphan crisis in our nation and in the world, I think that is a good thing.
