The Internet and Teens

How do you balancing safeguarding your teen on the Internet and his/her privacy? Or do you bother? Does your teen use social networking sites like Facebook, and how do they affect him or her?

I don't have teens yet, but after my eight year old looked up Super Mario on YouTube and got "Mario Fucker" I bought and downloaded Safe Eyes. Case closed.

I have a 14 year old. I blog about her. She's quite horrible much of the time as she should be. A nice teenager would be just wrong. So I say, if you live by the sword you should be prepared to die by the sword. So tough. It's all getting written down, mate.

All three of my kids are online quite a bit (6yrs old, 8 yrs old and 11). They like to watch videos on YouTube, play on miniclip, the oldest keeps a facebook page that we monitor closely. Our approach is that all computers in the house are public access, meaning, they have no privacy. If they happen to find something inappropriate, they have to navigate away, or they are not allowed to use the computer. For example, our 8 yr old was watching an Arthur video on YouTube, and he found one that someone editted to "Arthur Gets a Penis". We just tell him to find something more appropriate. And he did. So far, the self policing strategy is effective.
