"Yeah, I already read it on your blog"

When you and your friends share your lives with each other online, do you find yourselves re-telling stories when you get together in real life? How do you keep things fresh in friendships that you have both online and offline?

Oh my gosh, I was just thinking about this today. I just started blogging steadily last month and I've noticed that my friends never call me anymore because they read my blog. When I talk to them they never ask how I am doing and it's just talk of them, them, them all of the time. So sad.
Okay, I am exaggerating at bit ... My blog is about 2% of what actually goes through my head so luckily I still am somewhat multidimensional. Blogging only enhances my friendships. For instance I never have to tell people that my mother passed away when I was young or that she was a schizophrenic, they've already read it in my blog! It relieves me of that uncomfortable conversation altogether, but it's still something that I want people to know about me.
The hardest thing for me is to keep my writing fresh.

I tend to blog/twitter about the funny and entertaining things that happen in my life but keep the truly personal things private. I share personal stuff with my "real friends" - whether it's in person, on the phone, or IM.
Everyone has a different blogging philosophy about the limit of information they share, and I'm always cognizant of what I'm putting out there about myself.

me too. i don't really blog to stay in touch with people; mainly, I want to entertain them with super-high levels of zaniness. But I wonder if I should be a little more vulnerable. I guess that's just part of figuring out what level of reveal works best for the individual ~

Most of my friends that read my blog are not ones that I speak to on a daily or even monthly basis. My blog has served as a way to stay in touch (although many times it is one-sided, most of them don't comment). I know they read my blog because when they read something that really moves them they will write on my wall on facebook.
My best friends have just started reading my blog recently and I think that they enjoy it but it does not replace our calls or meetings with each other.

I stopped telling stories I've blogged for that very reason. People humor me because it's fun to watch me rant, but for me, not so much fun to catch that look and trail off. I get burned once in a while for not relaying some important news, and I'm always, "It's ON the blog. Keep up!"
Of course, people have no trouble keeping up when I'd rather they were busy. : )

So far, i don't tell many personal stories on my blog. I prefer to hand the blog over to my persona, who likes to satirize what's actually in my head. She's like: Oprah Winfrey meets The Onion. It's a little scary.

Well, since I want to blog somewhat vaguely about my angst with work (not people, just my situation really), and all my friends are in some way connected to my work, none of them know that I keep a blog. Its not a hush hush secret. Its kinda fun - I get to explore parts of myself without feeling like I need to be too too careful about what I say. My husband reads it, and sometimes that is a good way for him to keep breast of what is going on at home if he works away (and he can be away weeks and months at a time). So all my readers are people who I have met online - which is totally cool!
