Today, we're mourning the loss of the "enfant terrible" fashion designer Alexander McQueen.

"His brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection of extraordinary designs. At one level he was a master of the fantastic, creating astounding fashions shows that mixed design, technology and performance and on another he was a modern day genius whose gothic aesthetic was adopted by women the world over. His death is the hugest loss to anyone who knew him and for very many who didn't," said a statement from [Alexandra] Shulman on the [British Vogue's] Web site.

Representative John Murtha died today at age 77.  He was the 8th most senior of the House, a former Marine officer, and outspoken critic of the Iraq War.  Our condolences to his family.

One day last week, as an after-school treat my first-grader and I popped into the local diner for a grilled-cheese sandwich and – Isabella’s favorite part – a coveted counter seat.
