Armed with Makeup…and Bath Bombs, on the Eve of Womanhood

Lexi turned twelve last week, and to mark the occasion we made a mother/daughter trip to the mall where I bought her make-up and a push-up bra. No, I didn’t really buy her a push-up bra. That would have been ridiculous since everyone knows you don’t buy your daughter a push-up bra until her thirteenth birthday...

Nordstrom? No Thanks!

A high school boyfriend accused me of over-thinking things. A high school religion teacher made me feel like less of a freak by telling me you can't ever think too much.

My boyfriend was a jock. The teacher was a philosopher.

I learned over the next 20 years that the truth, for me anyway, falls between the two extremes.

I thought about the two guys and their advice for me this week after I turned down a chance to let the girls walk in a kids' fashion show at Nordstrom. The sales lady told me about the event when I bought Easter dresses for Esme and Josephine.

"It will be fun," she said. "Do you want them to be in it...?"

Life Savers

I've had a few e-mails asking me what baby products have made life easier so far, and I think I'm ready to take the time to really think about a good answer. First, because it was something I desperately wanted/needed to know when I was expecting and an answer I desperately searched for, and, second, because Adelyn has been so incredibly easy today that I've been left with nothing to do but watch her sleep with an occasional feeding thrown in. Seriously. Before this morning my days have been filled with mastering the delicate balance of meeting her needs, and although I could feel the stir-craziness bubbling up inside, it was masked by more important thoughts.

Fisher-Price's "Tablet for Toddlers": What Happened to Blocks?!

I must admit, I don't even know what a Zhu Zhu is and I certainly can't fathom sitting down to a game of Mattel's Mental Mind Flex  after a day like today. Granted, my son is only 2 1/2 and is easily entertained by removing every receipt and penny in my wallet and throwing it around the room, so the dire need for "the coolest" toy on the shelves isn't quite as crucial as it is in some homes. However, when I read about the new Fisher Price "Tablet for Toddlers" that was debuted this past week at the nation's largest Toy Fair in NYC, I realized I may need to stop pretending that his hand-carved puzzles and dried-out (non-toxic, of course) play dough are really fun...

Eco-Friendly Baby Products: The 6 Best

The first thing I noticed when reading the classic book “Goodnight Moon” to my son were those dark green walls in the baby rabbit’s room; yuck! Today’s “green” room is filled with earth-friendly products made from recycled and reusable materials to keep excess waste from landfills. Organic fabrics play their part too, since they aren’t treated with chemicals which affect the air and water supplies.

A growing demand for stylish yet responsible infant products has encouraged designers and manufacturers to think outside the plain, recycled cardboard box. The newest eco-friendly clothing, toys and related gear can be found in a wide range of price ranges. Here’s a round-up of our top picks...

Your Handbag Can Kill You

Last week, retailer H&M settled a lawsuit over the lead content of accessories such as purses and wallets.  No wonder our purses are so heavy (rimshot!).
