Why Aren't Moms Allowed to Have It All?

From Betty Confidential:

The day after he won the election, Barack Obama, who probably had more than a few phone calls to make, found time to drop off his kids at school that morning. It was a powerful message telegraphed to the world: My family comes first...

Maternity Leave Question

I just finished my fourth week back to work since my maternity leave.  The first two weeks were awful.  Every time I left for work I felt ripped in half.  I would kiss Emma three or four times and say, ‘I love you,’ between each kiss, just to assuage my guilt, as I walk out the door...

Leaving My Baby for the Office

Like the rest of you working mommies out there, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge (ok, it was more like a heart attack) of guilt the first day I left my son to go back to work. He was 6 weeks and 4 days old, at the time. I was still fighting the baby blues and having a miserable time nursing. Things just weren’t quite as bright and cheery as I had anticipated. The LAST thing I wanted to do was leave my baby (even though I was looking forward to a break from the “colic”) and venture back into the world of middle-aged men—the Army in my case.

Deciding to Stay Home

When I was pregnant, I had no idea how I would feel about leaving my baby and going back to work. At the time I was in Graduate School and I discussed the idea of how I would care for my baby my classmates. When they asked what I planned to do, here was my standard speech:

“My parents have agreed to split the babysitting duties with my boyfriend when I go back to work. They live close and my boyfriend works nights.” This usually shut people up...

Huh, I Never Would Have Guessed

Here I am, well into my stay-at-home mom adventure. It’s been…let me see…if I did my math right…just about 4.5 months. Damn. That seems like forever and like I just stared at the same time. Funny how that happens...

Post-Maternity Leave Blues: 4 Ways to Fight Them

I just ended my maternity leave of 3 months, and I went back to work last week. I still have not decided how I really feel about the whole thing. I was luckily able to stay home with the my first son for two years but not so lucky with my newest little one. I am so sad. It was very nice to go back to work the first day and have everyone ask how the baby is. It was so wonderful to share my photos with them and watch their faces light up when they saw him.

What Day Is Today?

Last week the holidays tossed my schedule out the door and slammed it in his face as he tried to come crawling back. I know, it seemed a little extreme to me too. With Dad-oo home for the week, visiting family and other craziness going on, there was no way to do the normal Momma and Eli activities. It was then that I realized that I miss my schedule...

Dance Like No One Is Watching

I've never been good at letting go, especially around new people, or people that I don’t see often, or sometimes even good friends. I’m always aware of other people around me. I don’t like to make a fool out of myself. I don’t like to be laughed at. I don’t want to be seen as a complete idiot. So I censor myself a little bit. No crazy dances, no outrageous expressions, nothing too out of character. Until, that is, I had my son. And even more so since I’ve been a SAHM...
