There's nothing like a good sale to bring out the bargain hunter in us Momversationalists. But there's also nothing like a fabulous cocktail dress to make us desperately want a garment NOW NOW NOW. So, who wins out? The bargain-hunting practical woman or the full-price-paying fashionista? And when? Karen Walrond of chookooloonks asks, "Are you a bargain hunter?"

well...nothing like a few eye opening expiriences to get it, like washing first time a garment 35$ and up to come out like your dog was bored doing the lundry or donating to a trifth/consigment store and see how low the reseal value of things really is. I agree with Maggie ,bargain shopping allows you to look like caviar on a tuna budget. ; )(p.s. not all "sales" are bargains go for quality. This requires flexibility ,creativity and patience for most people in this country to comeby 7.00$ dollars they have to work for an hour so why give up a 20$ so easily? just a tought.

My mother trained me well. She is amazing i shop at nice stores but that have clearance sections. Like macys 50% off rack always happens to have something nice. YAAY!!Thrift stores are awesome for jeans and pants. I like forever 21 for tops and camis they are like 2.50 for a cami awesomeness!

I am not a bargain shopper, exactly, but I am pretty frugal. I shop at second-hand stores a lot, for example. I like shopping there because it's a more sustainable choice, it's WAY cheaper (especially for kids who will grow out of or destroy the clothes in like 3 minutes) and you can find some amazing things. And I also like to sew and knit, so that comes in handy too. Again, frugal and green. But on the rare occasion I go into a 'regular' store, I don't shop sales. If I wanted to save money I wouldn't be in a department store in the first place.

I don't want to be all judgey, but isn't that a little superficial to put your KID in that position? What if you end up totally broke one day and your adult child looks back at the pictures and sees how nicely he was dressed and goes, "Damn, this was all my fault!" I mean...unlikely, but still...kids look back and see things in a way parents never did. Like I've mentioned before, I do have quite a few designer and name brand items for my kids. Baby Phat, Gap/BabyGap, Polo, Ralph Lauren, Carters, Mud, Express, American Eagle, Calvin Klein, Applebottom...etc. And to be honest, while there are some really awful cheap clothes (in general), there are just as many "designer" items that you look at and go, "What the eff were they smoking when they MADE this?" You can spend too much and still look like a dork. ;) I "splurge" at The Children's Place...I still buy their sales and take the survey at the bottom of the receipt to get another 15% off...but I know those items will last forever, and if I can't use them for another kid down the line...I can re-sell or consign them and at least make enough back to go buy my discounted desiner items. :) And your mom probably thought you looked great, btw! :D My mom always thought my hair was "cute"...It wasn't. Never. EVER. :D

I'm a certified bargain hunter! Paying full price gives me an itchy rash! LOL I know the time vs. money argument has been done to death, but I do my prep work while doing other things, i.e. clipping and filing coupons while watching TV, browsing the circulars while the kids are playing in the tub, stuff like that. Bargain hunting doesn't have to be time-consuming! I honestly never really understood that argument. But then again, I've never really been in a position where the cost of something simply doesn't matter. I'm also lucky enough to live in a big city, so my shopping options are plentiful. I'm also not into shopping as entertainment. I don't go to the mall "just because". I buy items when needed, and all at once. When I need some clothes, I get enough to last me a while, I don't get new shirts every weekend. I buy socks and undies for the whole family at once, even if some of us don't need them at that moment...that saves me the time and gas when they DO need them. I pop in the thrift stores when I'm dropping things off to see if they have any treasures that we can use, saves me a trip when someone suddenly "needs" something. There is an element of proactivity (is that a word? LOL) involved, but I get great deals, and rarely go outside of a 5 mile radius of my home.

I like the *theory* of bargain-hunting, but in fact I just value my time more than the small amounts saved by poring over the circulars and coupons or visiting a ton of stores for a single item. If I see something for-cheap, I grab it, but otherwise I just buy things when I need or want them, and move on. (My husband does clip food coupons, and I'm happy to help if I can do it while watching TV or something, but I'm lucky if I can remember our canvas bags or the list when I go for groceries, let alone the coupons...) Granted, we're not on a tight budget, but I certainly have been in the past, and my response was largely to buy luxuries (like clothes, since my closet is plenty full) less often, rather than at the same frequency but cheaper. Often a single new item can revitalize your whole wardrobe (or at least your feeling about it) for half a year or more anyway... On the other hand, we benefit from some deal-crazy parents, who provide the majority of our kid's clothes, so they get the fun of shopping a lot, finding steals, and giving us stuff, and we get the bonus of not having to bleed ourselves dry every six months for the basics for a growing girl...

I think the time-wasting part is a little overrated. I don't drive all over...I've been doing this for years, I know which stores are going to be my best chance for reduced ticket items. For example, I know that the stores are one season AHEAD of the current season (notice by the end of December there was a clearance on winter items and the spring stuff was already being stocked?). So, when the seasons turn, you're going to run into practically ALL stores having a clearence event to get rid of "old" merchandise. The reduced merchandise is sometimes 4 or 5 times less it's original price. I bought $20 PJ sets for $4 each. I go straight to the clearance section before even looking at anything else. Ever notice it's all the way at the back? They're hoping to get your attention on a higher priced item before you get there. I don't quibble over whether or not one grocery store has papertowels for 50 cents cheaper than another grocery store... And since our shopping area is pretty clustered here, "driving all over" tends to be more like parking towards the rear of a lot and still being central to 5 or 6 retailers, so I can walk between them. I don't spend a lot of time cutting out coupons...although if I hear of a good deal or get an online coupon, I am good about keeping those in a small section of my purse. I also take out the time to send an email or call a company if I really like their product and ask them to send me stuff. Right now I have about $6 in Seventh Generation coupons, $2 in Mrs. Renfros coupons...and $8 in Hershey coupons...and b/c they're directly from the manufacturer, I can use them on any brand within the company, their expiration dates are pretty far out, and I can COMBINE them. So there's no using them 50 cents at a time. In fact, my Hershey coupons are two $4 coupons, and the SG coupons are the same way, a $4 coupon, and a $2 coupon.

You've all inspired me to start clipping coupons. And as for an item going on sale - yes, the adjustment! I do it all the time. In fact, I don't even take the item back to the store with me, just the receipt. "Bought this two days ago, and notice it's on sale - could you please do an adjustment?" They don't even blink. Love that.
