I was engaged & married inside of 6 weeks. Other than pick out the top that was going to go with my capris...I didn't plan any of it. My mom did the whole thing (she was freaked out that husband and I wanted to go to the court house...so I told her, "We don't want to spend money! If YOU would like to pay for it...then by all means!!")...and we got married in the living room of a B&B in St. Pete...and spent a few days there for the honeymoon.

Haven't we had this conversation before? I really think so, but if not, then I'm certified crazy! Anyhow, we got married outside, and there were no restrooms, so I had to pee with my pose of bridesmaids in a seedy 'employees only' grocery store restroom. Hilarious... AND my maid-of-honor forgot to wear underwear!! http://memyselfandmommy.com/2010/05/23/a-year-ago-today/ I'm bias but I think this is the stuff that movies are made of.

I loooved this video montage of wedding memories! Planning my American wedding from Italy came with its own set of exciting email exchanges between my mother (who was acting/making decisions on my behalf) and me. I recommend planning your own wedding in person! Secondly, I recommend speaking your vows in your "mother-language". I tried to say my vows in Italian for my in-laws who attended the wedding from overseas, but watching the video, now I laugh at all the words I made-up. I'm not sure what I was talking about, and neither were they. Daphne, Your baby is ridiculously cute and well behaved (jealous!). Rebecca, I laughed out loud. Loved the boom box Ave Maria reference. My Italian father-in-law actually sang Ave Maria at our wedding in America. Here is a video snippet of him singing at our Italian reception in Naples. (Yes, got to wear my dress twice!!) Karen, Don't you just love your European hubby? :-) Mine is from Italy! We met while I was working over there. Mindy, You are so talented. I did change my name. To Wankel. Which, let's face it, isn't the greatest name. My husband and I went over all the options: him taking my last name, both of us keeping our own names, picking a third name we'd both change to. But at the end of the day, he wanted to stay a Wankel because his dad adopted him when he was 11, and he thought it might hurt his feelings if we got married and weren't Wankel. And I could handle that. It was not easy though, I loved my maiden name, and I have a huge family, and they are all so proud of that name (dad and his brothers are 1st generation Irish immigrants) and a huge part of my identity was tied to that name. But in the end I knew I was starting a new life as a wife, and the name change was a symbol of that. Not that I was becoming a belonging of my husband's, but that I was joining him and his family. And I have not lost my identity, it is intact.

I'm with Heather on this one... I took my husband's last name and didn't hesitate. For me, I didn't like my maiden name. I want that part of my life gone, and I was looking forward to what the new life meant. My husband and our children together are my closest peeps by far, so it was no problem for me to share their last name. I also agree with Dana about the choice. Take my husband's last name doesn't mean I'm bound and tied with no opinion. I could have chosen whatever the hell I wanted to. But, I'm a bit of a traditionalist and I liked the idea of sharing the name with my husband.
