Gay Marriage: Where Do You Stand?

The fight for gay marriages to be legalized in this country is perhaps, as Jessica Gottlieb says, the final steps in a true civil rights moment. Just a few weeks ago, a federal judge ruled that Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in California, violated the Consitution's equal protection and due process rights clauses. Today, panelists Rebecca Woolf, Alice Bradley, Jessica Gottlieb, and Daphne Brogdon, and Dana Loesch discuss their feelings about same-sex marriage and the role that the government should/shouldn't play in deciding whether it's right or wrong.

Pleassssse....its Same Gender Marriage. As in Lesbians Joining/bonding with Lesbians & Homosexuals Joining/Bonding with Homosexuals. Lets keep it real people.

Marriage is the province of the Church. It is a union of Man & Women. Period. However; should same sex couples want to have a legal union, fine. A new term should be created. I personally like Bonded & Joined (so you have a Bonding/Joining ceremony. You would still have to go down to the court house & get a licience, etc. The goverment would recognize your rights as a partner. All people would be treated the same & the term Marraige wouldn't be changed from the historical & religious definition that it is. BTW...I really detest the twisting of perfectly fine words to suit individual & special interest groups. For example...Gay & Lesbian. It's Homosexual & Lesbian. It would seem to me that Lesbian women are perhaps more secure with their identity than Homosexual men. Please people, I love the word gay & use it often...its a reminder of my English Grandma, who would use it often. Gay = joyous and lively; merry; happy; lighthearted etc.

Gays do have the right to marry. Like everyone else they can marry someone of the opposite sex. If marriage shouldn't be regulated and everyone should be allowed to marry whoever they want but about brothers and sisters who want to marry, or dads to marry their daughters. Yes, people are endowed with inalienable rights from their Creator - and every religion says that homosexuality is abhorrent. People who take part in sodomy and other gay acts, and then label themselves as gay, feel so unaccepted by society because their behaviour is in fact unaccepted by God and so they try and blame everyone else for their guilt and unhappiness - because they know deep inside themselves that what they are doing is just downright wrong. Good news is that there is a way out of sexual feelings toward people of the same sex, just as there is a way out of pornography. Look it up on the internet and you will find the truth if you are looking for it.

I have a really interesting idea on this, one that I am pretty sure the more religious people amongst will hate, but I think that if the word marriage throws everyone into a tizzy (because of the religious connotations of the word), we should just get rid of marriage altogether. Call the legal side of the situation a "union," have EVERYONE (male/male, male/female, female/female) get unions, and if you want to having a wedding in a church, you find a church that is okay with whatever sort of wedding you want to have. But a union is a union is a union. I don't think we are going to get the Bible Belt to share their "marriage" (which I find interesting, since Jesus was kinda all about sharing and being nice to people and whatnot), so we should just get rid of the word.

I have to say in a way I do not care about who wants to get married it is their business and if they want to get married let them. We let 20 year olds marry 70 year olds and no one is throwing a fit. Why, it is no ones business if they want to get married they can. Just because it is not right in our opinion does not mean it should not happen. We can have our opinions but accept that they deserve to live their lives the way they want.

Yes Sarah I agree, "Why, it is no ones business if they want to get married they can." However, government does not need to issue any licenses, give its permission or approval for any marriage or civil union. The institution of marriage will still function well without government involvement and all can live happily ever after. Everyone deserves "... to live their lives the way they want." Absolutely.

This issue isn't about whether we should ALLOW gays to marry. It's whether or not we're going to decide as a nation TO DENY a certain portion of our community equal rights. Those rights already exist. We're all endowed with them. The debate now is whether it's okay to take them away. And that's about it. Whether or not you believe marriage is a sacred covenant with God; whether or not you believe opening the door to the gay marriage is the downfall of society; whether or not you believe gays and supporters will ultimately be damned in some fiery inferno for eternity, is really not relevant to this discussion. Marriage means a billion different things to a billion different people as it stands today. Adding gay marriage into the mix doesn't change that. The way you feel about your marriage never has to change. And the way someone else feels about their marriage doesn't ever have to affect yours. It's really enough of the stone-throwing and the name-calling. My God is not a Taco Bell franchise, but my God did put the Taco Bell right down the street from the McDonald's so that I could have the choice.

I'm with the person that said, "I don't care." That's basically how I feel. Marriage really isn't a sacred thing anymore, in general. It all depends on the individuals taking the vows, and what they are vowing to do. I think that priviledges for being married should be done away with. For example: getting a tax break for being married should not exist, and things of the like. Want government to stay out? Keep government out completely. Want to make marriage more special, stop giving special treatment to people who get married. I considered getting married, at one time, just for the additional benefits, not for love.
