Pissed off mother nature? LOL Just the media flooding our lives with natural disasters that have always been occuring. Maybe your trepidation, Bacon, is merely the fact that you are getting older, you have children and you are realizing your mortality, all a part of growing up. Maybe if you had God in your life you would not be afraid of the death we all face.

I know, it's so hard to get everything across in a short video like that. Just to clarify, I am not afraid of death. Merely concerned that there has been a lot of devastation going on. And dude, I am totally getting older. I wouldn't change that fact for anything. : )

I'm just struck by the callousness. Culling the herd? Really? It all just feels smug and indifferent. No, the term "mud huts" in and of itself is not at all racist. The context in which you used it felt EXTREMELY racist to me. Call me PC. ;) My preferred way of "fixing" over population etc. would be to get useful sex education to people and CONDOMS. Lots and lots of condoms. My main point that I would like to again try to get to is that we need to take climate change and natural disasters of any sort seriously. It is unfair to the millions of people affected to not.

The "context" was again, an exaggeration to show the vast difference between a large, heavily populated, heavily built city like Miami or New York, and what is essentially NOT a heavilty populated, heavily built city. I think you are *perceiving* racism and un-PC-ness in something that is *neither* of those things! I am indifferent. People die everyday of natural & non-natural causes. I'm not lying prostrate, rending my clothes, or covering myself in ashes over it. Nature has a way of taking care of overpopulation...and if it means destroying huge populations at once with a shimmy on a fault line, then so be it. I'm not going to get *upset* over it. (Which isn't to say I'm not still concerned for the well-being of those who survive.) And climate change isn't something new. Our climate is continually changing...and has been since time began! I think people are simply taking notice of it now b/c we can easily track patterns all over the globe & go, "Hmm...75 years ago, it was, on average, 2 degrees warmer today!" What can we possibly be doing to make it MORE FAIR to people being effected by *natural* disasters?

I'm with you, Giyen. I think some sort of 'environmental apocalypse' is on the way only I think it's coming in baby steps. I live in the middle of the Canadian prairies where we're used to violent weather. So, not much has changed that way - it's the disruption of regular weather patterns that are causing the most trouble. Below average snowfalls, above average rainfalls, winter thaws, early frosts, late frosts, etc. Recordbreaking rainfalls have pretty much stopped seeding in its tracks in my area, the ducks are swimming in the fields around here. By the time they dry out, it'll be too late to plant. I'm not a farmer but living in a farming community means I can't help but be aware of the effects of the changing weather on the growing season. And this is only in my little corner of the world. I suspect these kinds of changes are happening everywhere. As for the media, yes, 'round the clock news stations need to be fed continuously and technology sees to it that they are.

Um. Perceived devastation? It isn't made up. It's there. I am slightly alarmed that these women seems to be brushing off the mass destruction that happens in these natural disasters. We are lucky here in the US, that we have the money or the engineering or whatever it is that we have that allows us to have some natural disaster warning systems, etc. Ways to try and keep people safe. Safer. Chile and Haiti and LOTS of places in China and wherever else, DON'T. That is a problem. AND there are a LOT more people who are being affected/killed. It's called overpopulation. Yes, the media plays a part for good or ill. At the same time, how do we even KNOW if there are or aren't more or fewer natural disasters happening? Our records of the past HUNDREDS of years don't even come close to being adequate to measure whether or not we are going through some kind of UPHEAVAL. What we do know is that our world is changing. There are real things happening to our environment. That doesn't have anything to do with earthquakes. Those happen. Like I said before, there are just MORE people who get killed by them now what with overcrowded cities and OVERPOPULATION. I guess my main point is that this is a very serious subject with LOTS AND LOTS of factors. It is cruel and shortsighted to poo poo them with saying "Oh the media! Silly silly media!" Quit making racist remarks about MUD HUTS and go learn something about our world.

Oh get off it, lol! 50-75 years ago in major Californian cities, lots of people, lots of BUILDINGS. My grandfather lived in Haiti just after his birth through about 6-7 years old, this would have been almost 80 years ago, I guess. The areas he lived in were all low houses (most made of *mud* bricks), no multi-stories, the "city" was market stalls & a few buildings along a dirt path...It wasn't P-A-P, but it was near a large port. I was absurdly using the term "mud huts" to show contrast. How is the term "mud hut" racist? As far as "perceived devastation" - maybe I am using the wrong phrasing. I certainly see the sadness and despair when the news is relaying what's happened during a natural disaster. But I also look at some and go, "This is NEWS? This pre-empted Days of our Lives??" I dunno...I figure with people complaining so much about overpopulation & resources being wasted...they wouldn't seem so upset when the heard gets culled a little.

I don't believe in mother nature. ;) Buuuut, I will agree with Jill. Civilization has really reached a HUGE landmark. There are buildings and people in places in the world that just a few decades ago had a few mud huts & a dock. The perceived devastation isn't really that extreme, it's just that if it had happened to a bunch of mud huts, people would have replaced the couple of fallen banana leaves & gone about their day. Now you have bricks, metal, concrete, and all manner of scary, heavy building materials raining down on people from the sky. Banana leaves...bricks...One is going to leave a mark. ;) I am from Florida, and the '04/'05 hurricane seasons were REALLY busy, but still not any more *dangerous* than they have been in the past. Now it's 5 & 6 years later...and there has been barely a peep. Yes, there were counties with no power for a few days & weeks...and a lot had to be rebuilt, but in one county in particular, if you went back to 30 years ago...there wouldn't have been a problem b/c there was no POWER in most of that county. It was all rural farmland!

Couple of things. First of all, global warming causes extreme weather patterns. Crazy winter weather, flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, that kind of stuff. It's been more extreme lately for a big reason. That is something I'm very afraid of personally. Because it could get much worse. Or not, who knows. Earthquakes are of course not weather patterns. The reason I think these are getting more media attention is that earthquakes and tsunamis have been happening in more economically rough areas, places that were not built to withstand large earthquakes, and the damage is worse. So, it makes for a more interesting news story when, for example, pretty much the entire country of Haiti is devastated and lots of people die, blah blah blah. And then, they reported all the other earthquakes afterward, in L.A., Chile, etc. because it seemed like there was a string of related earthquakes. And maybe there was. Or not, again, who knows. And thirdly, the media are definitely honing in on more of this stuff. We have 24 hour news networks. They have to report on SOMETHING. And when they do it, other news outlets jump on the bandwagon hoping to ride on some of the ratings they get. They are in the business of making news sound important, regardless of what it really is.
