Online Dating: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

No matter how you do it, dating (especially if you have kids) ain't easy... especially if you've been M.I.A. and out of the dating scene (i.e. married) for a while. Once you've determined you're ready to meet the (second) man of your dreams, you might go for a set up, or perhaps utilize one of the many online dating sites. Of course, online everything looks great, including Prince Charming (who btw, in person looks more like Napoleon).

I met a man.... On myspace chat.... This November is our 2 year wedding Ann. We have a baby together and I am just VERY happy and content with my life.

Online dating, hmmm? Well. I gotta say, I think it's great! My husband and I met on match.com and just celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary! I think the key to being successful in the online dating world is to be totally honest and up front about what you are looking for. Both my husband and I had recently gotten out of long-term relationships that pretty much drained us, but knew that we were looking for our life-long partner. So that's where we were both coming from and luckily, we GOT lucky and neither of us ended up being untruthful. But if you're not "looking for love"...haha, gag, then i'd say steer clear because I really feel like casual dating with no intentions to commit can best be done in a bar. I guess what I'm saying is I feel like it's not fair to muddy the waters with misogynists and serial booty callers. Keep it honest and you can have great luck!

Well... I joined a dating site years ago because my friend had joined and wanted to show me her profile. I got a handful of stupid messages like "yer hot" and deleted my account after a couple of weeks but before I did, I met a really great guy. We didn't fall madly in love, get married (to each other) and live happily ever after but I love his guts and he's one of my favorite friends so it was well worth it. http://www.theladyslounge.com

I met my husband online in a chat room. On Thursday we celebrated 9 years together and also our 4th wedding anniversary. I had dated online for about 2 years before meeting him, and none of the relationships worked out for one reason or another. I am blessed to have met my soul mate, he gets me like no one else ever has. I say try it out!

I just think that at a certain point in your life, if you've been in the same place for a while, you're no longer meeting new people -- you know everybody at work, you've met all your friends' friends, etc. So either you're willing to put your dating prospects on hold, or you are willing to trust in the totally random luck of the bar scene (with spare time coming from where??), or you need a new way to increase the number of guys you can have a look at. Online dating does a pretty good job of putting a lot of personalities into your contact space, giving you a jump on the usual process (that is, you know anybody you meet is "looking" and you have some amount of basic info that you might otherwise spend the first date exchanging). You have to spend a little while getting a feel for how "picky" to be, what aspects of profiles are more or less "telling", and how to tune your own profile so that you get some interest without filling your in-box with completely inappropriate guys. And once you make contact, there will be some folks who disappear (oops, work got busy, or an ex-girlfriend just reappeared), and some meet-for-coffees that are enough to tell that the chemistry isn't there. But if you only occasionally hit a reasonable match (i.e., somebody you date for some period of time), you're still way ahead of how you were doing just sitting at home. Enough reasonables, and there's likely to be a gem. You just have to be willing to do a little work uncovering that one (and/or enjoying the other folks you meet along the way). Another penny for the pond. I certainly wouldn't let stigma hold you back, because I think that viewpoint is already down to fumes, and lots of folks have met their partners online (whether in games, on blogs, or via dating sites), even if they aren't trumpeting it. Most of the folks I met were just busy professional types, not desperados!
