Private Parts: Do You Have Cutesy Names for Them?

How's your hoo-hah? Your twinkie? Your flower? How's your... vagina? Yep, doesn't quite have the same "cutesy" ring to it. And that's just fine with Daphne Brogdon of Cool Mom who is not a fan for precious nicknames for private parts (is private part a cutesy nickname?), especially when used by moms. Do these nicknames annoy you, and do you think kids should be taught them? Sound off!

I would have to say I SO appreciate this topic! I am a name user when it comes to teaching my daughter names for her private areas. Breasts are boobies, butt is still butt, and vagina is pooter... To be honest with you I don't know how to give her the real name for it, and her not go screaming it to the whole world. She is 5 and VERY social. She does not get embarrassed, and a lot of that is my and my husbands concerns of embarrassment. I have wanted to tell her the proper names for a while now, but I always have my mom in the corner you don't do that yet!!! She will learn at school! Well thats my issue! I wasn't taught from my mom, and it is a little embarrassing to say the real names for body parts. I want my daughter to not be ashamed of it, and hear it from me not school.

I've never thought of the "nickname" as anything but that. I have a boy and a girl and my sons easy pee pee or wee wee my mother in law taught him that. My daughter isn't even one yet so I don't know I still call it her pee pee because my son knows the difference He has a wee wee and mommy and sister dont that's what makes him a boy and us girls. However for my daughter I have a lot to think about now. Thanks for the heads up I'll defidently put more thought into it all.

Haha I have heard in my family the use of 'cookie' in the palce of vagina. Which my husband could not stand... For obvious reasons lol. I am going to stick to regular names I think. I mean my husbands ex wife has stupid names and honestly it irks me. Like for nasty she has her daughter saying 'thats kaw kaw'. It is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

I come from Puerto Rico and growing up I was told that the breasts where "tetas" and the vagina was a "tota" Even though there are the real words for these parts Seno (breast) and vagina, anyone in PR who hears the words Teta y Tota, know what they are. It's like "Tit" and "pussy". And even though now as I type this I realize that these words are the slang "dirty" version of the real words I have taught my 2 daughters to call their privates. "toti" & "teti" which is a cutesy form of the spanish version. My 9 year old knows the real words and will still call them the name I taught her and my 4 y/o doesn't really care what their real name is (I've taught it to her and she forgets right away - although I don't really emphasize the real word either.) I don't know I kinda like the cutesy name better. I know they'll eventually learn the real word so I don't really worry about it too much.

I actually just wrote about this subject the other day! It was time to make a decision - to make sure our (almost 3) understood the real names vs. the ones I thought were hilarious (confession: her vagina up until a few weeks ago was either 'not addressed' or called 'ooh-la-la' or 'woo-woo'). We're going with vagina - I do think she should know proper names. I do think with this particular topic while I was doing it for comedic value - a good part of me (and my husband) were for some reason embarrassed by the whole thing. That said, this whole parenting gig makes us grow up and learn just as much as she does so we're working on the giggles.

If the kids have an issue - as in pain, someone has touched their genitalia (or any part of them in an uncomfortable way) etc. - they know that they can tell us using either the anatomical terms or whatever they call it (I say boy parts/girl parts - step-son says something else, don't know what he calls it). They know that if they are talking to a trusted adult, like a nurse/doctor, Church teachers, school officials etc. that they should use the anatomical terms because those people don't know what their "name" for their genitals are. And yes, they get that when they're young. Just like they know there are things they say to mom/dad etc. that their pediatrician, teachers etc. won't understand. I think it's essential that kids know the proper names for their body parts - all of them. But at home if you and the kids are more comfortable referring to parts by whatever name your mom or whoever used then that's okay too. As for nursing - totally completely, 100% NOT my business how long anyone else nurses their child. As the mom of a micro-preemie, if I'd been able to nurse I'd have done so for as long as I thought he'd benefit from breastmilk. Would I be okay with him reaching into my top as a signal he's hungry? No. My job as his mom is to teach him acceptable & unacceptable behaviors. I don't think U.S. society is tolerant or open ENOUGH to breastfeeding.

USE THE PROPER NAMES!! I see no harm in doing so. My step daughter is 4 and has been taught by her biological mother that she has "privates" and "vagina" is not a nice word. So when she tells us that her "privates hurt" what is she talking about? Her bum or her vagina? I think that using silly names for anatomy teaches a level of shame for your body and there is nothing wrong with a vagina or penis and nothing to be ashamed of.

I think its ironic you critisize the use of nicknames yet you referred to the butt or buttocks as a bum. Bum is not the proper name.

No I say penis and vagina. My son kind of came up with his own. He calls it his "pee thing". No matter how many times I have said penis...he still says pee thing. I'm guessing his dad (who I am not with..married someone else!) and his nana on his dads side have something to do with that. Another thing is the funny names make me giggle. I can't even say them with a straight face! I remember the first time I watched this I was cracking up the entire time. So how in the world would my kids ever take me seriously if I'm constantly laughing when those stupid funny names pop up?
