Valentine's Day: Is It Important to You?

Valentine's Day is a holiday fraught with meaning. Sure, you've been married for 10 years, and V-Day seems like an unnecessary expense, especially in this economy. But, but, but! Pink tulips and a sweet Vermont teddy bear? How could you not melt? And when your hubby acts like Valentine's Day is the same old, same old? It's hard not to feel just a bit disappointed. So, will you be going all out this February 14th? Or will it be just another day at the office (i.e., home)? Heather Armstrong of Dooce asks, "Valentine's Day: Is it important to you?"

If we took more time to appreciate each other, had the occasional date night, and just generally didn't take advantage of one another I wouldn't care. However it is helpful to have a designated day to acknowledge and appreciate our love for one another. That said, if I don't prompt him it will probably go by unnoticed. As we continue to navigate through family life and some pretty significant changes recently hopefully we won't need a designated day to remind us to take care of our relationship.

Aw Daphne, I am in your same boat. My husband is a chef so every Valentine's Day he's called into the restaurant. It never really was a day for us. Our anniversary on the other hand, we always try and make a big deal out of. Mostly because that's a day we get all to ourselves. Feels more special like that.

I LOVE valentine's day but it's the biggest show day of the year for Burlesque so I'm always on stage and often out of town. It's rare that my boyfriend and I actually see each other for it. LOL to Daphne: "My husband is not Mr. Romantic, but that's okay because he can fix the tires on the stroller." You know, Valentine's never mattered to me in the romantic sense, I guess because I didn't have my first boyfriend until I was 17. So up until then, it was more a day to send little "love notes" to my friends, buy them flowers and candygrams through school clubs, etc. And that's still the part of Valentine's Day I get most excited about, even though I *am* in a relationship now and do expect at least an acknowledgment of Valentine's Day (usually just a card or dinner out together). My Valentine's tradition is to buy some candy and some cheesy cards and write something to my friends and coworkers to show them that I appreciate them. Even if no one does it for me, it makes me happy to know I might be bringing a little smile to the face of someone I care about. Because Valentine's Day can be for celebrating ALL KINDS of love.

Oy. Not my favorite holiday. I think it's ridiculous that there's this one magical day of the year when we are supposed to go out of our way to show our SOs how very very much we love them. I thought that's what anniversaries were for??? Not only that, but the holiday is skewed toward women. Women get all the chocolates, flowers, teddy bears, dinners out, all that stuff. And that makes me feel guilty. It's also completely unfair to single people. The PRESSURE to have someone special in your life, even if just for that one day, is daunting. I, too, had a boyfriend who did the whole dozen roses, huge box of candy deal on Valentine's day and I HATED IT. I do NOT like when someone gushes all over me, let alone in the super cheesy "romantic" way. It was a disaster. And I ended up breaking up with him because of it. I am so lucky to have a husband who feels the same way. We've never done a damn thing for Valentine's day, and my feelings are totally not hurt if he doesn't get me flowers or something. I often forget it's even Valentine's day unless I get reminded by the internet or something. Just another day.

Valentines Day is important to me. I love it. Last year, when I was still pregnant, my mom promised to baby-sit for us this Valentines Day, and I've been looking forward to it ever since. Unfortunately, my mother was admitted to a psychiatric hospital this week. Worst holiday ever! Ok, not even a holiday. Just a big marketing ploy by the same capitalists who now rule Christmas, Easter and Halloween. Yikes - I'm bitter. I've never been into Valentine's Day... except now. Because now my daughter has to do those crummy little Valentines cards for her friends at school lest she be snubbed by said snotty-nosed classmates. Oh, the tragedy! I ... loathe... LOATHE... Valentine's Day!!!! Here is why... 1. I think it is depressing that we need a holiday to show our love for the special people in our lives. It should not be that we make a big deal out of this holiday, and then struggle to show love the rest of the year. 2. I waited tables for a long time, and Valentine's Day is the WORST day out of the year. It is the one day out of the year that people who NEVER go out to eat, go out. Therefore, they do not know how to behave or tip. They are rude, impatient and they do not know how to tip. OH, I said that already. ALSO, you see these people out that are miserable together, and they do not want to be there because their relationship died a long time ago, but because it's Valentine's they have to pretend to love each other in front of strangers. I'm a catering manager now, so the joy of working o n this day continues 3. It is a holiday that makes people who are lonely feel really lonely. 4. It is expensive. There is no reason to spend $100 on roses when the next day, they will be on sale for $5. My husband and I do not celebrate the holiday. Never have. We do make the day a little special for our daughter. It's a fun excuse for us to give her a small toy and do a special activity. I'm willing to bet that most people who work in the food and beverage industry do not like Valentine's Day.

We were just making plans with another couple for Sunday and I was like, "You know it's Valentines day, right?" And they were like, "Oh? Meh." That's about how I feel too. With no one else to watch the kids, a lunch date with another couple sounds more fun than a romantic evening putting junior to bed!
