What Does a Mom Look Like?

Does fashion and being a mom mix? When you become a mother, do you automatically have to wear mom jeans and cut your hair? Or can you rock tattoos and piercings? And do all sexy clothes get thrown to the back of the closet? The look of moms range from Angelina Jolie to Rosie O'Donnell to June Cleaver and everyone in between. But what do you think of when you picture a mom? Rebecca Woolf of Girl's Gone Child asks, "What does a "mom" look like?"

i think that you girls(moms) 100% say what a mom can dress like if she wants a mom is a mom whether or not you dress like a bussiness woman or a punk rocker a mom is always a mom-your friend alena piarra

I love this topic! I've found the most important thing to do when you become a mom is to keep yourself on your own priority list. By getting pedicures, wearing clothes that fit properly, keeping your hair modern and your makeup fresh, you'll notice a difference in how you feel. When you personally feel good about yourself, and how you look, you will be a better wife, mom and friend. Your personal style? That should be all you. Don't follow trends but incorporate pieces that are classic with modern detailing. It's all about the details! Most importantly, get ready every morning, do your hair (a ponytail counts but NOT everyday!), makeup (3 basics: concealer, mascara, lip gloss) and wear fitted clothes. Fashion and Beauty are fun, make it a part of your life- especially if you have a daughter as she learns by watching you!

Hi there. Im new to this site. I started browsing the internet in search of maybe a little reassurance.I have been a Mom for 20 years. I became a Mom at 20 and again at 27. My oldest is 19 and in college and my son is 12 in junior high. After chaperoning a school dance a couple of nights ago(I joined the PTO) I wonder why this same comment has been happening for many years. I consider myself to dress conservatively, yet Im told by "other Moms" at times I dont look like a Mom. It still hurts after all these years. I will be turning 40 in a few days. Maybe Im too serious but truley I dont understand. Maybe its because Im 5'2 and short??? whatever it is Im tired of it! When I had my daughter in 1990 I gained 60 pounds. It took a long time to lose the weight. I wasnt ever told then that I didnt look like a mom then .Oh well, Ill stop complaining now but , it does bother me alot!

I fully agree with Giyen - Mom's will judge you no matter what. I also think people in general will judge you no matter what. What's that bit about how an opinion is formed within the first 15 seconds of meeting someone? As a nanny (and not a parent) I have a set of nanny clothes and I have another set of clothes for everything else. I wear jeans and t-shirts when "on duty." Sometimes, when events overlap, I will wear my alternative set of clothes and put on a dollup of makeup and I feel fantastic! It's amazing how much better you feel when you make an effort - whatever your definition of effort might be. In Rebecca's blog, she mentions how Coco Chanel probably didn't envision the velour sweatsuits as chic, but if it makes you feel fab - do it. I completely agree. Wear what you want to wear when and where you want to where it. Do it for you and no one else. If you want to be the sweatsuit mom? Do it. Rest assured there are others out there like you, you just have to find them.

I had my first child at 18, but was raised by a mother who was born in the 40's. My perception of a stay at home mom was set by what i saw growing up but boy did it change. At 18 when i had my first child i had tattoos and piercings. I wore what i now consider hoochie clothes and was all about me. After I had my first son and the stretch marks took over my belly the crop tops and mini skirts went out the window. Now at 23 i gravitate more towards comfort, but still enjoy dressing up occasionally when i go out with hubby on a date. I still have tattoos but the biggest one is a cheetah cub on my back with my kids names under it. I still have my tongue pierced, but constantly think about taking it out. Not because i don't find it to be "mom-like" but because i just think i have grown out of it. I dont think any one mom should conform to a set mold. To each their own and it is all about what you and your kids are comfortable with.

It's funny how I can be JUST thinking about a topic and then you guys cover it here. I'm 4 months in to my new mom status, and I've been feeling lately like I need a wardrobe makeover... Been going through my stuff, planning to donate lots. Why? I think because I have a new and different and ACCOMPLISHED body now that I want to celebrate, not hide or misdress.

Clearly I disagree with the "tattoos and formal wear don't mix" comment. I think that every woman is beautiful, tattooed or not. I have a bazillion tattoos and have had short hair since I was 19 so I don't see how having short hair makes you mom-like. Interesting views though. I still dress the same as I did pre-baby. Designer jeans and tank tops, band hoodies and Vans. I don't think your fashion-identity needs to change with the opening of your vagina.

I caught a lot of crap for dying my hair pink a few years ago when I was about 27 or so. It wasn't the color that bothered people, it was the fact that I was a mother. People constantly asked me what my kids thought of it as if I'd scar them for life if they didn't approve (at the ripe old ages of 6 and 2). Of course they didn't care, and my daughter's favorite color is pink, so she loved it!. It's not like dying my hair defines me as a person or anything, but I was certainly surprised by the reaction I got about something as temporary as a hair style. I wonder what people's reaction would have been if I'd been older and sans kids. -M

I live in San Francisco and became a mom at 29 which out here is pretty young. And we don't make a heap of money like a lot of people here. So, I go to playgroup and it's women age 35 to 40 wearing these stunning fashionable outfits. I've always dressed very casually--lots of jeans and white tees. Sometimes I throw in a funky accessory like pink sunglasses or big chunky rings. And like I said, we don't have the moola for me to be going out and getting the hottest fashions from downtown. I dress the same as I did before I had a child, and I'm fine with the image I'm conveying. Except that I'm always getting mistaken for the nanny! But, I'm not going to start dressing like an "old lady" or whatever just so I can fit in better.
