There is so very little universal expert parenting advice that fits each child or every mother. And, for as many children there are in the world, that's how many tidbits of opinionated advice -- from friends, family, total strangers! -- you'll get once you saunter through the door of motherhood. The competing and calamitous secrets and strategies you'll hear as your child gets older only increases in intensity, too. I find this "new and improved" Momversation site more confusing than Sarah Palin's vocabulary. Anyone else feel the same way?

I don't buy anything with corn syrup or artificial colors. I'm convinced that garbage is making us all very sick. I pack a lot of fruits, veggies, and granola for snacks. I also like Annie's crackers - all of them!

There was one advice I like the most: "Your kids need a happy and healthy mother" - so I stopped trying to become a perfect parent and started my therapy :) One more phrase about motherhood I love, is (I don't know, if it counts as an "advice"): "It would never become easier. But you'll get used to it"

As a younger first-time mom who had little experience with children under 3, I was terrified of my newborn. My mom's advice was, "It's pretty hard to break a baby." Which, okay, I know...but I was having trouble putting clothes on her because I thought I would bruise her by trying to shove her little arms into sleeves. Also from my mother: "Put a crab in water." A bath, a pool, a hose, a sink half-full of water and some measuring cups; they all soothe my little crab in a way not much else will.

I was at a party and my 9 mo old little boy fell, scraped his nose and was bleeding. Not hemorrhaging, there were no bones showing, he merely scraped the skin on his nose, that's it. Well you would have thought his arm was chopped of with a machete. I flipped out, I mean really lost it, and as a reaction so did my son. After a few minutes we both calmed down and I apologized to everyone at the party, I was embarrassed at how I reacted to something so small. My friends mom came over to me after I had caught my breath, held my hand and said "As a mom of three boys, I have to tell you, calm down. He's going to hurt himself and sometimes really bad, but if you lose control and freak out, he will too. He looks to you to know how to react to something. So even if you are scared and you want to cry with him, don't . . . just take a deep breath and relax. He's going to be okay." Now almost a year and a half later I still hear her voice in the back of my head whenever my son has a slip, fall or boo-boo. I might not work for everyone, but it hit home with me.

I'm with Alice...I don't want advice unless I specifically ask for it. Even then, I reserve the right to think the advice is awful and not to follow it. That being said, the very best advice I ever got was when I was pregnant with Jack. I am the oldest of four and a stepmom to a wonderful young lady (who was 18 when I was expecting)...but I had never been pregnant before, or mothered a newborn...no matter how many diapers I'd changed on my siblings! I was sitting in a fellow school counselor's office, about to burst I was so pregnant, when Mary asked me if she could share one piece of advice with me from when she'd had her daughter Tori 14 years ago. She had been told by a male collegue to enjoy when Tori was a teeny-tiny baby. I thought about it for a minute as Mary explained herself...she said, when I was up for the fifth time at night with him, ready to pull my hair out from exhaustion, frustrated beyond belief, to take a deep breath, snuggle my peanut and remember, he won't be so tiny for very long. I nodded in agreement and then left her office. A few weeks later, when I was on the late shift with our son who would only sleep if held, I was feeling the frustration overwhelm me...and then I remembered her words. Somehow, it calmed me and I felt able to do this whole mom thing. I may not have been perfect, and still got angry over the lost control I had in my life, but I do my best to enjoy every cuddle, every wet kiss, every smile, and every stage. Now I think, he will only be three for a short time...and sometimes I think "thank god" and sometimes I snuggle him just one extra minute before tucking him in at night. I thank Mary often for that advice, because it has allowed me to enjoy mothering that much more:)

Look at Daphne looking all Hollywood! I'm a anti-giving advice to anyone. I think Jessica said it best in a previous Momversation- if you want to end a mommy relationship just give that person some parenting advice. The advice I had received when I first had Ducky was to sleep when the baby is sleeping. I was willing to accept that advice and used it for every nap time! I can openly admit to napping while he napped at the age of two and a half, it didn't happen often so I was willing to take them!

OH! I also think parents need to give themselves permission to go to a movie or leave the house for a couple of hours and I say, DO IT! I'm no good to my kids if I'm stressed and irritated. That's the only other piece of advice I'd give parents, give yourself permission to relax.
