Why Is It So Difficult to Make Mom Friends?

Aristotle said that "friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies." And while that would certainly be nice, a soul to go have a cup of coffee with would be good too. But sometimes, it seems like even a java buddy is hard to find when you're a mom.

It's so difficult to find a "mom friend" that there's even an eHow post on the topic. But why is it so? Is it our schedules, our kids, our husbands? Or is it just hard to connect with anyone in this increasingly segmented and busy world? Dana Loesch of Mamalogues asks the panelists, "Why is it so hard to make mom friends?"

I'm 20 with a 2 year old boy! I don't have ANY mommy friends..It gets lonely at times..I've met other mom's but it's so hard " to make a connection"...

My child is 2 and I have yet to find any good mommy friends! I am young, (was 19 when I had my child) so automatically, that puts me in a loner category. I see a lot of moms at the park with children the same age as mine, but the moms are so much older and just not as laid back, too stuck up. I am so lonely, so is my child. I just wish I could find some mommy friends!! It would be so great if there was a website to connect with other moms your age. My life would be so much happier!

It is like dating! I broke up with a Mommy friend last spring and it was heartbreaking. It's very difficult for introverted moms with a challenging child to make close mom friendships. I really miss my friend!

Hello! I'm new on this site, and this video is SO relevant to what I am going through right now, which is why I thought I'd leave a comment. I am a young mom, and I had my daughter at age 20 (I am now 22). I love being a mom, but I find it so hard to connect with other moms with children my daughter's age because they turn up their noses at to me because I look so "young" (I've gotten the "are you her babysitter?" line many times). Even when I do chat with moms, I feel like it's awkward to ask them to coffee right after I just met them. Is that too soon to ask? I rarely see the same moms at the library or the playground and so it's hard to build up any kind of relationship.

Young moms struggle I understand however, old moms have trouble too because everyone thinks my husband and I are the grandparents. It is hard to fit in when parents are in their 20-30 and you are in your late 30's and early 40's.

That is exactly how I feel. I am caring for a 3 year old child and I am in my 40's - all the parents could technically be my kids age-wise. I can't believe how stupid people are when they ask if I am the grandma. I don't look old and I don't feel old but I am definitely from a different generation. Where would one find older parents to befriend?

I was searching this today and found your site (awesome site by the way). I have lived in this small town (in Saskatchewan, Canada) for 4 years now and still do not really have any friends! I am a 37 yr. old mother of 2. My son is 4 and my daughter is 2 1/2. It appears that all of the mothers, with kids my kids' age, are at least 10 years younger than I am. Also, they are all basically from here so they all know one another. I can remember the first time I went to the moms' n' tots thing they have here...I walked in and NOT ONE person came over to introduce themselves or say "Hi" or anything! So I sat beside some women and tried to get involved in the conversation (without appearing nosy, or whatever they may think). It was awful and I still feel that way toay - 4 years later! People around here just don't include a new person in a conversation and I find it very rude and difficult! There was one woman, on my hockey team, who i got talking to - and she was saying that was looking for a good friend, etc. So I tried talking to her more, facebooking her more, etc. and then, all of a sudden, she stopped talking to me. All I figure out is that she thought I was "stalking" her and I was a creepo...so????? I was just trying to make a friend! So ya - I find it VERY difficult to make friends here in this small town!
