In 2002, 11 days after our daughter was born, my husband was severely injured in his military helicopter, and also killing his co-pilot. It's been 7 1/2 years since that tragic day, but I've felt a calling to help make a difference and share my experience, strength and hope with other soldiers. On January 27, 2010 I will be headed to Army Boot Camp and ultimately train to be an Army mental health counselor in the Army Reserves...so I wrote this poem for this contest.
At 40 years old and a mother of 3, I’ve taken the step to help keep this country free. They said I couldn’t do it, they said I was too old, but I knew in my heart, I wasn’t willing to fold. I witnessed first hand the casualties of this war and I shed my tears and wondered what this was for. I realize now there’s a calling for me, to help soldiers in need and teach them to be. I’ve joined the Army and you ask why?? I want to catch the tears of those who cry. I’ll be an Army counselor when all is said and done. But first it’s off to boot camp, I hope it’s mostly fun. But before I go, I must make this plea to ensure that I can be all that I can be.

I am so sorry to hear about your husband.
I may not know you personally but I can tell you that I am very proud of you for what you are doing. My aunt is a former Army Chaplin. She worked in Iraq for 2 years before leaving the Army. Before that she counseled soldiers before and after they went to war. It is not an easy job. What you are doing is going to make a HUGE difference in the lives of so many men and women. I think that you are a beautiful woman both inside and out!
